December Scholar-in-Residence
featuring Rabbi Goldie Milgram
December 5 - 8, 2009

Scholar-in-Residence: Rabbi Goldie Milgram:
Torah Through New Eyes
Friday - Monday, December 4 - 7

Rabbi Goldie MilgramRabbi Goldie Milgram is founding director of ReclaimingJudaism.org, a site offering tools to create meaningful Jewish experiences. She travels internationally as a teacher of Torah and Jewish spiritual practices, and has authored numerous works including Reclaiming Judaism as a Spiritual Practice, Meaning & Mitzvah and Living Jewish Life Cycle. Rabbi Milgram holds a doctorate from New York Theological Seminary and is presently spearheading a national initiative to advance meaningful approaches to Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation and celebration.

During her time at Brith Shalom, “Reb Goldie” will demonstrate numerous approaches for making the Torah service and Torah study more accessible, meaningful and moving.

We invite the community to join us for Shabbat morning services and share the experience of seeing "Torah through New Eyes”.

SESSION 1: Friday night, during Shabbat services:
Rabbi Milgram will deliver the Friday night sermon, relating an astonishing and moving experience that she had while visiting the Ukraine.

SESSION 2: 9:30 AM Shabbat morning Torah service:
Rabbi Milgram’s creative approach to the Torah service is a “must see” experience, and the highlight of the weekend.

SESSION 3: Shabbat, following Kiddush lunch:
Words, letters and phrases in Torah are seldom what they seem on the surface. Come and explore the Torah of metaphor, our sages way of revealing hidden portals of meaning, spirituality and relevance for living.

SESSION 4: Sunday, 4-6 P.M., in the chapel: “Dynamic Torah” Laboratory
Rabbi Milgram will lead an interactive workshop modeling some of the methods she uses to bring renewed energy to the Shabbat morning Torah service.

SESSION 5: Monday 9:30 A.M., Torah Study with Sisterhood Study Group:
We’ll be listening closely for “herstory” in this fascinating parsha (Vayishlach) that relies upon several ethical breaches to ensure the Jewish future.

ChaiJoin our Interfaith Effort to Feed the Hungry.   NOW WE NEED YOU-and feel free to bring a friend!! Everyone is invited to participate in this mitzvah at least once each year. Continuing our commitment to provide assistance at SEARCH the third Wednesday of each month, we will gather on November 18, December 16, and January 20 with our interfaith partners in this project, Christ the King Lutheran Church. Please come for an hour or two (or more) from 7:30 a.m. to 12 noon.  For more information, contact Dori Wind at 281-242-1762 or Laurie Silverblatt at 281-381-6976.

MORE SOCIAL ACTION INFORMATION

SEARCH Homeless Services has requested funds to help feed the needy for THANKSGIVING.  Last year, SEARCH provided over 39,000 meals to 7,400 men, women and children.  With help, homeless families are 21 times more likely to achieve stable housing than those without assistance.  You can help rebuild lives today, so that next year these families can set their own tables.  If you wish to contribute, SEARCH is accepting non-perishable food or donations (checks payable to SEARCH) for their clients for this holiday.  If you wish to make a donation, please give it to Gail in the CBS office, or leave a bag marked SEARCH in the cloakroom.  Thank you for participating in this mitzvah.

Now that the weather's cooler, SEARCH is requesting blankets for their clientele.  So, please check your closets and bring new or used blankets to the cloakroom, and we'll get them to SEARCH.  The other item SEARCH is requesting is Insect Repellent, in the form of Bugspray or Wipes, for their Mobile Outreach group.  Of course, SEARCH can use many other items as well: clothing, warm outerwear, towels, etc.

Do you have some free time? The Social Action Committee is looking for volunteers to visit residents at Seven Acres.  This effort is still in the planning stages.  Please contact us, and we'll discuss what arrangements are being made.  We're also looking for volunteers to help with the SEARCH booth at the FALL BAZAAR on Sunday, Nov. 22.  Please help us selllovely SEARCH ceramic pins to raise money for this worthwhile organization.
