Caring
Chesed, roughly translated as Caring, is one of the four pillars upon which we base our synagogue philosophy. At Congregation Brith Shalom, Caring is demonstrated through:
- Chesed Committee - This committee performs acts of lovingkindness for members of the CBS community who are in need or facing a crisis. Members of this committee offer empathy, drive to and from medical appointments, make phone and home visits, cook, shop, and bring congregants to Shabbat services and special functions. The people served by this committee know that they are not alone in their time of need.
- Diversity Outreach - We have the following three goals in this area:
- We seek to build relationships, alliances, and coalitions with individuals and other diverse groups with whom we can share our histories, cultures, and religions
- We seek to devise strategies that will educate others on issues of anti-Semitism with the final goal of ending it, and at the same time, to alert our members to understanding and eliminating the oppression of others.
- To develop projects with other groups that address certain needs in the larger community.
- Social Action - We perform the following functions within our community:
- Commitment withtwo other churces to feed the homeless at SEARCH.
- High Holiday Food drive and Passover Food Drive
- Collect toiletries and make blankets for Chidren's Protective Services
- Work with PTO to provide toys for Childrens's Protective Services at Christmas
- Work with Bar/BAt Mitzvah students on social action projects
- Collect books for Harris County Hospital District Half-Pint Library
- Work on gardens around the shul
- Mitavah Day Projects
- Community of Respect - We are very proud that our religious school has completed a series of Anti Defamation League (ADL)-approved anti-bias activities and has signed a Resolution of Respect. In this way, our school is recognized as part of the ADL No Place for HateĀ® program.
